The Fujian Aotai dual-sensor redundancy monitoring solution helps achieve precise runoff measurement in mountainous areas of Guangdong.

2026-02-27

In February 2026, Fujian Aotai Automation Equipment Co., Ltd. successfully deployed a river runoff measurement system in a runoff monitoring project located in a mountainous area of Guangdong Province, providing reliable technical support for mountainous area water resource management and water security assurance.
Conducting precise measurements of runoff flow in mountainous areas is of great significance for understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of water resources in river basins, monitoring soil and water loss, implementing early warning and prevention of flash floods, managing ecological flows, and scientifically scheduling water resources. This provides crucial data support for ensuring regional water security and protecting the ecological environment.

This project employs a dual-ADV Doppler velocity and flow sensor to comprehensively sense river channel flow velocity. The ADV sensor detects flow velocity by transmitting ultrasonic signals into the water body and utilizing the reflected echoes from acoustic scatterers present in the water. As these scatterers move with the flow, they cause a Doppler shift in the reflected signals, enabling precise measurement of flow velocity.
When both sensors are functioning normally, the system takes the average of the measurements. If either sensor fails, the system automatically switches to the data from the functional sensor. The two sensors work in coordination and serve as redundant backups for each other, ensuring continuous, stable, and reliable measurements.
This solution offers significant cost advantages in surface water measurement in mountainous areas and is easy to install. The equipment features flexible power supply options: it can be powered either by a 220V mains supply or by a 12V DC solar power system, making it well-suited to challenging environments in mountainous regions where mains electricity may not be available.

The system host centrally processes sensor data and uses edge computing to obtain flow rate results. The host can display in real time the operating status of each sensor, individual data from each sensor, and the final flow rate data—all in an intuitive and convenient manner.
The sensor is equipped with a built-in water level sensor. Combined with reference elevation data, it can directly calculate the cross-sectional flow rate. Finally, the measurement results are stably uploaded to the server via a 4G public network, enabling all-weather, automated, online monitoring of mountain runoff.
